The Philosophy of the Programme

The postgraduate diploma is designed to serve as a structured retraining program for holders of the diploma in environmental health, who are already practicing; and to provide practical skills for those who have acquired BSc and higher qualifications with less or no practical training. The program will therefore provide high quality training both in practical and theoretical aspect of environmental health. The aim is to produce environmental health practitioners who are well –equipped to perform their job effectively and efficiently; with confidence of their contributions to optimal health of the population, employment generation, integrity of the environmental aesthetic and of course sustainable national development.

The graduates of the program will be able to identify, plan, implement and evaluate activities and program designed to prevent and control diseases, promote public health through organized societal efforts, thereby reducing the burden of diseases to acceptable minimal level. The program will benefit from the synergies from other related and relevant programs in the faculties and departments of sciences, biology, chemistry, microbiology, biological technology and technological sciences. The products will therefore be able to move further to carry out research and study for either MSc or MPH in environmental health, environmental microbiology, environmental health impact assessment, environmental health biological technology, environmental epidemiology, water quality management, environmental health biology, environmental health ecology, waste management, environmental chemistry, environmental health administration, occupational health and safety, pollution and toxicology, environmental economics, urbanization and demography.

 

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission into the PG – EH, a person must have at least 3 years cognate experience in the field, and would have been working either in public or private sector in addition to holding any of the following qualification:

  • the Royal Society of Health (RSH) Diploma;
  • the West African Health Examination Board (WAHEB) Diploma;
  • the Higher National Diploma (HND) for Health Technologist, with at least lower credit;
  • BSc – Environmental Health from a Nigerian University, with at least second class lower division;
  • BSc – Environmental Health from a university outside Nigeria, with equivalent score of 2.5 GPA,
  1. BSc in related subject like Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Health Education, Medical Sociology, Social Psychology, Medicine, Sanitary Engineering, Building Construction or any other subject as the Council may approve from time to time, but with at least second class upper division.
  2. A Master (MPH, MSc, MEM) in Environmental Health, Environmental Management or any other related subject.

Duration and Graduation

The programme will be run on full-time basis. However, part-time programme may be considered if adequate arrangement is made. The full-time programme will be for 12 calendar months, while the part-time will be for 18 calendar months. The entire programme will consist of taught courses, practical, concurrent field practice, and research/project and field attachment for 3 months.

The minimum credit units that qualify a learner for graduation shall be 40. Each credit unit is equivalent of 20 hours work. To obtain the Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Health the learner must meet the minimum credit units, which must include 30 units of environmental health core courses, 3 units from field practical, 1 unit from field internship and 6 units from departmental electives.

Examination and Requirement for the Award of the Diploma

To be eligible for the award of the PGDEH, the student will be required to participated in all activities with 85% attendance, completed all course work and maintain a minimum credit unit of 40 as described in 7 above. No student shall be allowed to carry-over any course from one semester to another and every student shall be required to fulfill all conditions at every stage of the program.

No student shall be admitted for the final examination without satisfactory academic work. Continuous assessment shall form an integral part of the overall assessment and shall also be used as the basis for admission into the final examination. Examination shall consist of theory, practical, MCQ, and oral where necessary. A student is expected to pass all compulsory courses.

The examination shall be graded as follows:

70% + - A

60-69% - B

50-59% - C

45-49% - D

40-44% - E

0-39% - F

For the final award of the diploma, the following grading shall apply:

4.5 – 5.00 GP - Distinction;

3.5-4.49 - Upper Credit

2.4-3.49 - Lower Credit

1.5-2.39 - Pass

0- 1.49 - Failed

The certificate to be awarded at successful completion of the programme shall be called the Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Health (PGDEH
