KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY PRESENTS ECOLOGICAL CENTRE.
THE Kwara State University’s Centre for Ecological and Environmental Research, Management and Studies, CEERMS will draw national and global attention to ecological and environmental issues, while using relevant information to educate the society.
This disclosure was by the Director of the Centre, Dr. Henry Sawyer at the formal presentation of the activities of the centre to the public and Kwara State University community at the Kwara State University Malete, recently.
According to him, the centre will also conduct studies and research in the communities as well as empower the society with state of the art tools for better stewardship of the earth, including proffering management strategies for an enduring eco system.
To this end the centre will soon begin information dissemination to primary and tertiary educational institutions, to help increase ecological and environmental awareness.
Programmes of the centre will include outreach, research, training and certification, workshops, seminar and conferences as well as ecological tools.
Others, he says are donor support, eco – award events and market place sensitization.
One of such programmes Dr. Sawyer noted includes the outreach ecological and environmental awareness project named O – 2 EAP, which will involve daily visits to selected secondary schools and rural communities.
It will also involve presentation of movies on ecological and environmental issues as well as the establishment of a global village interactive medium via email exchange, and pictures posting on website. The university will also initiate a project termed “Adopt a Tree at Kwasu Campus”, which will require interested persons to pay for a specified and selected tree for growth on KWASU campus, with their name inscribed permanently on the tree.
The centre’s research will focus on desertification, erosion control, integrated waste management, recycling and composing. Others are waste and waste water management, ground water pollution and management, and natural Zeolite and synthetic remediation of organic carbon compounds.
The university don explained that the centre will develop a relationship with globally acknowledged institutions with online, international programmes to offer training and certified programmes.
It will in addition organise seminars, workshops, conferences, on environmental issues, and organise ecological tours.
Dr. Sawyer used the forum to explain that in recognition of individual, private and corporate stewardship of the earth, the centre will organise Eco Awards events including Eco Award Night, A Green Tree and Attire Affair and Green carpet Walk to honour contributors.
