KWASU create awareness on need for Hepatitis vaccination

The Kwara State University Medical Centre, The KWASU Anuoluwa Health Group and UNAIDS World Bank, have organized a Hepatitis awareness forum for staff and students of the Institution. The Medical Director, KWASU Health Centre, Dr. Nimat Ameen while declaring the forum open said hepatitis which is a deadly and highly contagious disease, is not known to many Nigerians, hence the need for the enlightenment programme for the KWASU Community. According to her the event is also part of the activities of the KWASU Anuoluwa Health Group which is a health awareness creation and preventive medicine group. Earlier the representative of the UNAIDS, World Bank Centre for disease and Virus control.  Oladimeji Ajao explained that Hepatitis is an ailment that destroys the liver completely before patients are even aware that they are afflicted with the disease.
The disease is contagious and can be transmitted through sweat, sex, sharing of sharp instruments, sharing of items like clothing, shoes or even towels.   Others are tools used in saloons and other body care outfits.The only way out according to him is through screening for hepatitis and prevention through vaccination. Mr. Ajao listed symptoms of the ailment to include difficulty in breathing, lower abdominal pain, the skin and eye turning yellow, the palm and soles of the feet will be itchy as well as hallucination. Described as the “silent killer“ Hepatitis according to the expert can only be prevented through vaccination, while damage to the liver can be treated through a transplant that may cost as much as four million naira, nothing that it is always better to guard against contracting the ailment. The health awareness forum also featured free Hepatitis screening exercise for staff and students of the Institution. The KWASU Anuoluwa Health Group was established in memory of a pioneer KWASU student, Miss Anuoluwa Owolabi who lost her life following a complicated Asthmatic attack in 2010.
