The Governor said Kwara State occupies a prominent position in the North, explaining that advancement in literature is a venture worthy of promotion by the State University. Earlier the Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Professor Oba AbdulRaheem, stressed the importance of the review of the role of literature in Northern Nigeria. This review includes a review of the role of not only literally works, but films and other materials. The University don called for the promotion of the study of literature in Northern Nigeria, while impressing on the institutions organizing the conference the importance of sustaining the venture. In his address the Vice-Chancellor of the Kwara State University, Professor AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, said that the Conference is aimed at promoting innovation and creativity in Northern Nigeria literature. Provost of the College of Humanities Management and Social Sciences, Professor Abiola Irele, noted the importance of all aspects of literature to the development of knowledge. The opening ceremony featured and keynote addresses by Professor Zaynab Alkali and Professor Tanimu Abubakar. The four-day conference which started on the 29th of November 2011 will end on Friday 2nd of December 2011. |

The Kwara State Government has restated its drive to make the State University a pivot for community and national development. The Kwara State Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, represented by the State Education Commissioner, Alhaji Rahman Raji, stated this at the opening ceremony of the 6th Annual Conference on Literature in Northern Nigeria jointly hosted by the Kwara State University and Bayero University Kano.
